Professional Experience
Greg began his mining career in the Ipswich coalfields of Queensland as a cadet mine manager in 1978 and worked his way through the industry as a miner, timber-man, roof bolter and machine operator. He gained his first class mine managers certificate in 1980 and for the next 18 years worked as an undermanager, undermanager in charge, mine manager and general manager at underground coal mines in Queensland. During this time Greg remained an active member of the Qld Mines Rescue Service and was awarded his 20 year service badge in 1998.
In 1998 he joined the Department of Natural Resources and Mines following the release of Moura No 2 Disaster Report and was part of a newly formed team charged with developing and introducing the risk-based safety and health management system philosophies underpinned by the new Qld mining legislation. In 1999 Greg was appointed as the inaugural Chairman of the QLD Emergency Exercise Management Committee which oversaw the privatisation of the Qld Mines Rescue Service and introduced the state-wide Level 1 Simulated Emergency Response Exercises to the industry.
In 2001 Greg established a private consultancy practice servicing the mining, energy and resource sectors and in 2002 was contracted by the CSIRO to co-ordinate the internationally funded Enhanced Mine Communications and Real Time Risk Management project. Continuing his work within the CSIRO, Greg was a key driver in the establishment of CSIRO’s Minerals Down Under Research & Development Flagship in 2004 and was appointed as the Director of Mining Research in 2005. During this time, Greg was a member of the United Nations European Economic Commission’s Task Force on methane capture and control, a member of the United Nation’s Expert Group on coal mining and represented Australia on the Asia Pacific Partnership for Clean Energy and Climate coal mining task force.
Greg joined Anglo Coal Australia in January 2008 as the Head of Safety and Health Improvement, and was elected by his peers as a member of the Qld Minister’s Coal Mining Advisory Committee in 2008.
In 2010, Greg was appointed as General Manager Operational Risk at Anglo American Metallurgical Coal charged with the development and execution of an integrated, consistent and global risk management process to serve all aspects of Anglo’s mining operations and future capital expansion projects.
Following the successful global roll-out of the Anglo American Integrated Operational Risk Management Standard, Greg returned to his private consultancy practice in 2012.
